It’s fun when an engaged couple comes to visit our barn and grounds for the very first time, and they instantly know they want to get married here. It happened when Janet and Nuri came over. We showed them the place and let them stroll around together, and when they walked back to our house, they had made up their mind.

Often, couples who are so decisive, show a strong vision in how they put their wedding together. And it definitely showed at Janet and Nuri’s intimate, picture perfect wedding, on September 24th.

Jessica and Mark

Jessica and Mark got married this Sunday. They had met in yoga class and their wedding was Buddhist inspired. It was a sweet and laid-back event.

The next morning, we saw Jessica and Mark before heading back to the city. They had just dropped off all their beautiful wedding flowers at the Kirkside Retirement Home in our village. “Who ever heard of a stingy Buddha?” – Bhikshuni Thubten Chodron

Jess and Mike got married this Saturday, as hurricane Irene entered the continent. But there wasn’t the least bit of nervousness as they got ready for the day. This couple is so adorably cool! Their ceremony ended in a rock & roll performance. And as the stormy weather reached the Catskills, they partied in the barn till late. Love can weather any storm.

Omar and Euriphile were the very first couple who got married at our barn this summer. Omar’s sister Hilary loved our places, and was specifically taken by all the colors. Now Hilary knows something about colors: she’s the deputy editor at Canada’s House & Home! So we were really very pleased when we found our place to be featured on her blog! Have a look.

It’s always great seeing a couple getting married at the barn, knowing the place is totally in tune with who they are and how they want to celebrate their union. Stacey pretty much knew it was the right place the moment she found us online. Though Jay admitted he first needed to check it out before selling his heart on our barn. (Lucky for us, the photos on our site are just as pretty as the real thing.)

Stacey and Jay made it into a laid-back, idyllic celebration. A sweet ceremony under the trees. A rock band in the barn. Delicious, local BBQ. An artisan wedding cake. Stacey’s self-cut glasses and candleholders, made from dozens of different wine bottles. A wide range of beers nestled in an iced canoe. And the warmest group of family and friends.

Butterflies flying over the large field. The sun shining through a gorgeous wedding veil, created by the bride herself. Up they walk, to the forest, where family and friends are waiting under high-rising pine trees. An accordeon and violin play Astor Piazzolla.

It’s like watching a fairytale.

Heather and Rich

This Fourth of July weekend Heather and Rich got married at the barn. As Rich mentioned jokingly: “The setup day and breakdown day had perfect weather.” The afternoon of the wedding however brought an unusual amount of rain, and so Heather and Rich swiftly changed their plans. The ceremony was moved into the barn, which was dressed up amazingly with tons of wild flowers and a drapery of knotted old fabric pieces in the barn door opening, creating an adorable flower power setting.

Heather had collected huge stacks of different plates: souvenir plates, flowery plates, old fashioned plates, all of them unique, adding more laid-backness to the tables. Rich had set up the guest book announcement on an old typewriter.

There were many kids at the wedding, and they were treated to movies on the upper floor, outdoor drawing while sitting on hay bales, and to catching frogs in the ponds.

Rain or shine, this wedding was something special!

Euriphile and Omar

Last weekend Euriphile and Omar got married at our barn. It was our first wedding this summer and it was a glorious event. They brought along the warmest group of family and friends.

It had been raining heavily on the previous days, and just to be sure, the ceremony had been moved from the meadow to the more nearby lilly pond. We had never had a ceremony there, and it looked stunning. As the ceremony unfolded, a drizzle started. Omar’s mom had organized a bunch of Japanese paper parasols, which did the trick. The little bit of rain actually added a touch of magic to the very personal and moving vows.

The Equal Marriage Debate: a 14 Year Old’s View

My dear friend Sarah Ritchie, who’s a New York wedding officiant, wrote this meaningful article on her same sex marriage website. We love it.

As many of you may know, Friday night, New York State made history becoming the sixth and largest American state to pass “equal marriage” legislation, which will allow same sex couples to enjoy full marriage rights in the Empire State. Although this debate has been percolating for some time, and we were aware that the vote was imminent, I was taken aback by how emotional my response was to the roll call. Via social media, I knew the vote was coming quickly. I was alone, on the Long Island Railroad, returning from a wedding I officiated earlier in the evening. My BlackBerry was very nearly out of juice, and I felt isolated—this is the kind of moment that is really meant to be shared.
