Our barn
The barn seats up to 150 persons. The structure is built against a cliff, with the lower floor only exposed on the backside. This type of barn is called a Bank Barn (more about this type of barn on our History page).
The event spaces in the barn are on the middle and top floor. The middle floor opens up to a tree-lined lawn with a lily pond, through two large barn doors. The bar is located on this floor.
The top floor is usually the primary dining area (though during warmer evenings couples may also choose to have dinner on the lawn in front of the barn). The balustrades on the top floor open up to the dance area and to the big open barn doors a floor below.
Though most barns tend to be rather dark because of a lack of windows, each of the three floors of our barn has seven windows facing the southern gardens.
The lower floor is where the two restrooms and the caterer’s prep area are located.
The grounds

Our 42-acre property includes much more than the beautiful three-story carriage barn. Upon arrival through our forest driveway, you’ll enter the large, sloping wild strawberry field. On the elevated end, a giant bonfire is set up, waiting to be lit as the finale to your day. The large field offers gorgeous mountain views, and is a great location for a wedding ceremony or cocktail hour.
The surrounding forest offers a couple of gorgeous spots for ceremonies to choose from as well: just a one
minute walk into the forest, our pine grove with its tall pine trees feels like a natural cathedral, adding drama to the occasion. Another open spot under thousands of oak tree leaves offers a lush, shadowy scene.
Strolling down the field, you and your guests will enter the tree lined lawn, leading to the barn with its large open barn doors. The lawn, with a rambling brook on one side and the water lily pond on the other, is also a great spot for cocktails, or on a warmer evening, an outdoor dinner celebration.
Laid-back & idyllic
With its old-world grandeur and stunning natural environment, The Roxbury Barn is the perfect setting for a laid-back, idyllic wedding, anniversary or special event.
Our sloping wild strawberry field, and the adjacent pine grove and forest, are the ideal setting for your Catskill wedding ceremony, with the backdrop of foliage, ponds and mountains. Have your hors d’oeuvres outside near our lily pond, or simply enjoy strolling the grounds with your guests.
The barn itself can be set up for sit-down dinners, buffets, or stations. The middle level, with its big barn doors opening up to a blissful tree branch covered open space, is the perfect place to conclude your celebration with dancing and a band.
Events can be scheduled for any day of the week from late May till early October. We host only one event per week.

Roxbury and surroundings
The Roxbury Barn is located less than a mile outside of the village of Roxbury, and during your wedding weekend you and your guests are minutes from mountain biking at Plattekill, performing arts at Roxbury Arts Group, a cocktail at the trendy Public Lounge, or a stroll and bite at the famous Round Barn Farmers Market.
A place with a story
Built as a summer house with a horse carriage barn more than a century and a half ago, The Captain’s House and the Roxbury Barn were founded by a Mississippi riverboat captain. Since then the barn has served as chicken coop (though that adventure was short-lived), and the place has starred in an Oscar nominated movie…
